The Mường Bo and Bản Hồ communes (Sa Pa, Lào Cai) annually organize the Xoè Festival to celebrate the Party and welcome the Spring, attracting many local ethnic people and tourists to participate.

Festival Space

The Xoè Festival is held in Mường Bo commune. This activity is part of a series of events during the Spring Festival in the Sa Pa region.

The festival begins with a ceremonial offering, where village elders, clan leaders, and respected figures in the Tày community present a tray of offerings that includes products made by the diligent hands of the Tày people here, such as a whole boiled rooster, a whole boiled piglet, a whole boiled duck or goose, fruits, bananas, tangerines… along with paper offerings, incense, and other ritual items.

Offering Ceremony

In the wide yard, a tall bamboo pole is erected, decorated with a red paper ring (symbolizing the sun), representing the villagers’ reverence for the “Thần Nông” the god of the fields and crops.

Traditional Games

After the ceremonial rites, the vibrant Xoè dance accompanied by traditional Tày music takes place, attracting many locals and tourists to join. Following that are various folk games such as: crossbow shooting, tug-of-war, spear throwing, marathon running, water bottle filling, chicken nest weaving, traditional ball games, and eagle hunting.

The culture of the Tày people living in Mường Bo and Bản Hồ is rich with unique and sophisticated ethnic characteristics. This is a strength that helps these communes tap into cultural tourism and community-based cultural tourism development.

Tourists Enjoy Participating in the Festival

The annual Tày people’s Xoè festival has created a joyful, healthy, and meaningful playground during the Tet holiday, promoting cultural exchange, preserving, and enhancing ethnic cultural values, and helping everyone connect with their roots. The festival has become a prominent cultural highlight that attracts tourists to visit, participate, and learn about the beauty of traditional festivals.
